Resilience

The Ability to Cope with the Strains and Stresses of Life

What is Resilience & How Do I Get it?

Resilience is a person’s ability to ‘bounce-back’ from problems, difficulties and life challenges. In life we can all expect to have our fair share of difficult times, for example when losing a loved one or when suffering ill health.

Everybody has a different level of resilience and this is why some people are able to cope more than others when experiencing similar problems. Resilience is directly related to our coping skills.

So what makes a person more or less resilient?

The Origins of Resilience

Resilience is a combination of biological, psychological and social (bio-psycho-social) factors.

Whilst there is some evidence that a part of being resilient is passed on genetically, the greater part of resilience comes from our social experiences during our developmental life (in this sense ‘social’ refers to any and all interactions with other human beings – parents, care-givers, friends and relatives).

Dr. Michael Ungar

Dr. Michael Ungar is a world renowned expert on resilience. You can listen to what he says about it in the video below:

You Can Learn to Be Resilient!

You cannot, of course, go back in time and re-experience the social factors that might have contributed to you being more resilient but what you can do is to review and re-model your core belefs and values that derived from those times.

By understanding and learning how to modify beliefs and values you can create a new set of ‘perceptual filters’ that allow you to interpret experiences in new and more useful ways.

This is precisely what we do with the Thriving at Work Programme which combines everything we know about cognitive behavioural science with practical teaching methods for bringing about fundamental changes in resilience levels.
