Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, refers to the ability of the brain’s neural architecture to change through the use of cognitive principles.
It was not too long ago that scientists believed that the brain’s neural network was essentially ‘fixed’ and incapable of changing throughout a person’s life course.
Current research shows us quite clearly that cognitive techniques, such as those encountered in session of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) can produce significant changes to existing neural pathways and thus create new responses to situations that may previously have been habitual.
What this means is that if mental health problems are related to ‘unhelpful thinking patterns’ (such as catastrophising about fairly minor events) then by participating in CBT counselling that the neural structures associated with a catastrophic response (a habit) can be permenently cahnged to elicit new and more helpful responses.
In other words, CBT (and other cognitive tools) can produce real biological changes to a person’s brain that could completely eliminate mental health problems that are assocaited with habitual thinking patterns.
Prevental Healthcare have been using the principles of neuroplasticity to help clients overcome a wide range of mental health problems since 2009 (through our sister company Tranceform Psychology).
