Mental Health Protection

Applied Psychology to Protect Against Mental Health Problems

Unlike medical illnesses such as Malaria, Polio or other conditions that can be attributed to pathogens in the blood, the vast majority of mental health problems have NO biological causation and can, instead, be thought of as individual reactions to life stressors.

There are two principal models of mental health used to describe symptoms (for example anxiety or depression) and although the biological model is widely cited within the media, it’s scientific basis is highly contentious and widely challenged within the psychological community.

Because the bio-medical model has become so dominant, due largely to the billions of pounds of pharmaceutical money pumped into promoting it, many people have come to believe that the only way to solve these problems is through the use of medicines and drugs.

In this sense, the bio-medical model is purely ‘reactive’ and offers nothing in terms of preventative strategies – there is no ‘pill’ to prevent mental health problems before they arise – you can’t vaccinate against depression!

Protection through Resilience

However, by learning how to be ‘resilient’ to life stressors using applied psychological principles and techniques, people can significantly reduce the risks of developing a mental health problem BEFORE they develop.

Some people, of course, develop resilience at an early age and this is largely due to the way a person is ‘brought up’ in their earlier developmental years, through good parenting and socio-cultural learnings.

Resilience is a skill that can be learned at any age regardless of your personal background or history and can be thought of as a ‘protective mechanism’ against unhelpful or adverse reactions to life problems.
