CBT Counselling

CBT counselling is a “talking therapy” based on the idea that “what we think (Cognition) affects the way we feel (Behave), and what we feel affects the way we think.”

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and is a proven from of psychotherapy used extensively throughout the NHS mental health services IAPT programme.

It is built on five key CBT principles and directly addresses a number of ‘unhelpful thinking styles‘ or ‘traps’ that people frequently ‘fall into’ as a result of previously learned or socially conditioned thinking styles.

Unhelpful thinking styles are adopted as a direct result or the fundamental ‘underlying’ core beliefs and values that we develop over our lifetimes.

Negative or adverse life experiences may often lead to the production of limiting beliefs which are any set of beliefs that somehow limit your ability to get on with your life.

At Prevental Healthcare we can help you to cope and overcome many mental barriers and limitations using CBT’s proven methods.

By helping you to understand and manage your thoughts and beliefs we can teach you how to create different outcomes – feelings and behaviours.

As a specific strategy for change, it may be more suited to people who do not want to “go back” or “re-visit” past negative experiences in their lives and its primary focus is on your life TODAY rather than what may have ‘happened’ in the past.

Occasionally it may prove to be useful to ‘consider’ past experiences and how you may be using ‘strategies’ that you learnt during those years to cope, but the critical point within cognitive behavioural therapy is that is NOT the past affecting you TODAY, but rather how you THINK about the PAST Today!

CBT is often selected by GP’s as an alternative to the prescribing of anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication and has been proven to be a very effective therapeutic technique for dealing with limiting beliefs and cognitive distortions.

CBT is one of the NHS’s preferred therapies due to the fact that it produces measurable results over the course of the sessions.

What Happens During Sessions of CBT?

CBT involves uncovering, understanding and then changing those beliefs and thoughts that lead to behaviours and feelings that are causing your current problems.

We can help you to “get to the bottom” of these thought patterns, see them with a more “balanced” point of view, and then set about changing those behaviours using proven tools and methods.

These ‘behaviour’ changing tools are based on the simple premise that behaviours which produce helpful outcomes tend to be reinforced and repeated, eventually becoming new habits.

Is CBT the Right Therapy for Me?

CBT does not suit every person and one of the principal reasons is that a lot of work and effort has to be put into the sessions in order to get the best results.

A great many people suffering problems are looking for some sort of ‘magical’ cure or ‘miracle’ process that allows them to make fundamental changes without having to make too many sacrifices and put in a lot of effort.

Whilst this would be really fantastic if it was true, the fact is that the only person who can really make the necessary changes is yourself, and if you are willing to put in the effort, then CBT is a proven way of doing this.
